In writing a memoir in pieces or fragments, compression is just as important as elongation–and juxtapositions tell the story.

The writer of the memoir in pieces is an assembly artist—a hunter, a gatherer, an arranger, a culler, a keeper. They favor recurrence over redundancy. They build their skills in both compression and elongation. We’ll take a look at the ways in which memoirs in pieces get made—from the first bursts of flash nonfiction to the development of unifying themes and structures.

Rich with prompts and propelled by exemplar texts and insights into Beth’s own processes, this illustrated presentation will also feature photographs of Beth’s handmade books, which are constructed using surprisingly similar techniques.
