MASTERCLASS | Character Development: Writing the Other

June 8 @ 11:00 am - 3:30 pm EDT

Virtual Event Virtual Event

This has been rescheduled from June 1st to June 8th

LIVE ON ZOOM | Saturday, June 8th, 11 am – 3:30 pm Eastern

We have been made of people, shaped by people, defined by people, and defined ourselves in opposition to or in allegiance with people. Can we ever be truly alone on our memoir pages?

This Masterclass is part of our new series of longer writing workshops for in-depth learning and moments of creation within the class.

We don’t put others on the page simply to glorify ourselves by way of contrast, or to give ourselves excuses for the choices we’ve made. On the other hand, no one is perfect. Platitudes and sentimentality, when applied to the characters in our lives, do not advance our stories or our understanding. Nor do they honor the inherent complexity of human beings.

So, how do we write the others in our lives—be they family or friends, teachers or strangers, neighbors or shopkeepers?

In this masterclass, you will…

  • LEARN to tell a story of yourself that in some way contains the stories of others
  • DISCOVER character development techniques used by other memoirists
  • RESPOND to question cascades and prompts
  • WRITE and share/listen to new work from the class and learn from Beth’s responses

Participants will be given time to write, and volunteers will have the opportunity to share their work with the group and to learn from Beth’s response.

This class is ideal for…

  • Writers who wish to generate more rounded portraits of others on their pages
  • Writers who wish to engage with others, share their work, and extend the stories they are writing
  • Writers interested in spending the day among other like-minded souls, responding to excerpts and prompts

Closed captioning is available. ✔
Think you might miss part of the class? No worries, replays will be available.
